US President Donald Trump has given TikTok another 75-day extension for it to find a buyer for its US operations. The Chinese-owned app was supposed to either sell up in the US or shut down by Saturday, April 5. But Trump has decided to give the platform more time. “We do not want TikTok to ‘go dark’,” said Trump via his Truth Social platform. “We look forward to working with TikTok and China to close the Deal.”
In a statement on Friday, TikTok owner ByteDance acknowledged that “an agreement has not been executed”. As reported by the BBC, it said that there are “key matters to be resolved. Any agreement will be subject to approval under Chinese law.”
There have been reports that a deal was nearly clinched on Wednesday, but fell through when the US President started unveiling his new tariffs. Amazon is one of several companies to have been cited as a potential buyer.
