Taf Makopa, managing director of Wall of Entertainment, today announced the launch of MAKO Foundation, a new initiative aimed at improving livelihoods in underrepresented and economically disadvantaged communities in Leicester and Zimbabwe. The foundation’s stated purpose is to reduce barriers to entry in the creative industries by providing targeted education, mentorship, and professional development opportunities.
The MAKO Foundation has been established against the backdrop of an increasingly digital world, where major platforms such as Netflix and Prime Video are actively seeking fresh narratives from diverse voices. Recognising that many aspiring creatives face financial constraints, limited access to professional resources, and a lack of industry networks, the foundation seeks to address these challenges directly with three key objectives;
•Skills and Mentorship: To equip aspiring creatives with the necessary skills, guidance, and professional resources, thereby enabling them to build sustainable careers in digital content creation and related fields.
•Strategic Partnerships: To develop strong partnerships with businesses, educational institutions, and creative organisations. These collaborations are intended to create pathways for employment, funding, and further professional development.
•Inclusive Ecosystem: To foster a thriving and inclusive creative ecosystem in Leicester and Zimbabwe by promoting diversity, accessibility, and long-term opportunities for groups that have historically been underrepresented.
Makopa (pictured) emphasised that the success of the MAKO Foundation depends on broad-based support. “We are seeking support from funding bodies, equipment donors, and industry experts,” he said. “The initiative calls for a dedicated platform for developing upcoming talent both on and off screen, along with buy-in from brands committed to inspiring the next generation.”
The foundation is designed to provide practical assistance and foster industry networks that have been difficult to access for many emerging talents. While the initial focus of the MAKO Foundation is on Leicester and Zimbabwe, its vision is broad. The initiative aims to demonstrate that great stories can emerge from any background, provided that the necessary support is in place. By facilitating access to industry-standard resources and expert advice, the foundation intends to enable a new generation of digital creatives to tell their stories and contribute to a more diverse media landscape.
