Jono Yates launches Scran Away: a deep dive into food, fans and football culture

by | Mar 13, 2025 | News

Jono Yates, the creator of digital first community Only Scrans, is serving up a fresh take on football culture with Scran Away, a new weekly social series that celebrates Britain’s best away days for food lovers – against the backdrop of some of the sport’s less well-known locations. Episode one of Scran Away, which dropped this week, focused on League One stalwarts Leyton Orient, with upcoming episodes travelling to Birmingham City and Port Vale.

Explaining the proposition, Yates said that, as Big Six Premier league games become increasingly inaccessible, lower-league clubs become more and more representative of modern British supporters. Scran Away looks to the stands and streets of these beloved smaller-town teams to meet the die-hard fans and spotlight their matchday traditions.

Scran Away is where “history, passion, and local flavour collide. Visiting Britain’s most iconic clubs, Jono scouts the ultimate spots for pre-game pints, mid-match bites, and post-game feasts. Every stop tells a story, shining a light on the spots that truly matter to fans and highlighting how football culture is shaped by the diverse communities that support it.” Using a food-focused, documentary-style approach, Scran Away captures the clubs as they are; the sights, sounds, and energy of the places visited – from the sizzle of a grill to the roar of matchday crowds.

As a content-creator and founder, Jono Yates has built a reputation as being relatable and honest. Only Scrans, His online community with 1.3m followers embodies this approach with unfiltered food reviews and fuss-free recipes. He said: “Football fans don’t just turn up for the match – they turn up for the whole experience, and food is a massive part of that. With Scran Away, I loved getting to meet the people behind the local spots that have been feeding supporters for generations. It’s about celebrating the diversity of food that fuels football culture across the UK.”

Alongside Only Scrans, Yates is creative director & co-founder of YRDS, a sports and entertainment marketing agency. Scran Away is a co-production with YRDS and Listen, the production company behind The Traitors: Uncloaked and Olivia Attwood’s So Wrong It’s Right.
