Dorsey’s Bluesky and Snoop Dogg’s Shiller crash social media party

Just when you thought social media couldn’t possibly make space for any more platforms – two come along in a week.

First, Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey (pictured) launched a beta version of Bluesky on Apple’s App store. Then music industry iconic Snoop Dogg and tech entrepreneur Sam Jones shared their plans for Shiller.

Bluesky has been touted as a rival to Twitter, which is currently reinventing itself under Elon Musk’s ownership. Early reactions to Dorsey’s new platform suggest it looks like a simplified version of Twitter. Users (who for now can only access the platform when invited) can post a message of 256 characters in length, and also add photos. Twitter-like functions at launch include the ability to comment on posts, repost and like.

Bluesky began life in 2019 as an in-house project at Twitter, but left with Dorsey when he stepped down in May 2022. Currently there is no timescale for when the final version will launch. For now, people who are interested can try contacting Bluesky CEO Jay Graber, who tweeted: “We are still in beta, but DM me if you want an invite.”

Over at Shiller, Snoop Dogg announced his involvement in the new app by saying: “I’m excited to partner with Sam to launch Shiller to the world. This app truly provides a platform for creators to reach their fans in unique ways and monetise their content.”

Launching in April 2023, the Shiller team say that the app “combines the best of web3 technology with live, interactive video and audio streaming, to provide a one-stop-shop for creators, including NFT projects, artists, brands, and key opinion leaders, to monetise their following and connect with their audiences.”

According to Shiller, approved creators will be able to enjoy “a suite of tools to monetise content. Features include the ability for creators to token-gate their video and audio, share products from commerce sites, and promote popular NFTs. They can receive tips and virtual gifts from their audience, which can be cashed out as fiat, and engage with their audience through emojis, chat, split screens, voting, and games. The app also allows creators to create their own tokens and digital passes, which can be featured on the Shiller marketplace and marketed within live audio or video shows.”

With its suite of tools and innovative features, Shiller says it is “poised to revolutionise the content creation industry. Get ready to see a new era in the way creators create and promote their content, brought to you by the power of web3 technology”.
