Digital-first pioneer Rooster Teeth back from the dead

Rooster Teeth, one of the early pioneers of digital-first content, is back in business – less than a year after it was shut down by parent company Warner Bros Discovery. The brand and some of its original IP has been acquired by one of its original creators Burnie Burns, via his own company Box Canyon Productions.

At its peak, Rooster Teeth boasted a global footprint of more than 30 million subscribers across its YouTube Network, 1.2 million unique monthly visitors across its apps, and more than 4 million registered community members.

The brand, which is famous for shows like Red vs. Blue and RWBY shut its doors last year after 21 years of creating content for online platforms. Under Burns’ leadership, the historic brand plans to “renew its focus on innovation, community engagement, and the spirit of creativity that first defined its success”.

Burns started Rooster Teeth in 2003 with Red vs. Blue, which the company claims is the longest-running web series in history. Over the years, Rooster Teeth expanded into a major multimedia player, producing RWBY and the international RTX convention series, while fostering a global fanbase. On the reboot, Burns said: “I am excited at the challenge of bringing Rooster Teeth back to its roots. The heart of this brand has always been its fans, and I look forward to writing a new chapter together.”

Box Canyon Productions was founded in 2023 by Burnie Burns to create content across various media platforms. Its Morning Somewhere podcast debuted in 2024 on Spotify at number one in the UK, Australia, and Canada, and number two in the US.

Along with the acquisition, Box Canyon announced a new development slate for 2025, including renewed production of some of the platform’s classic shows, a new original audio adventure Again, and an untitled reimagining of Burns’ first film The Schedule.
